LAS VEGAS MAGIC SHOW

Are
the days of the Magician wearing the tux and the tails gone? Somehow
years ago we lost the Magician who made the rabbit appear out of the
hat. It has been years since I have seen a Magician use the "Rabbit out
of the Hat" trick or concept, yet for years I have had
children
ask me that same question, "Can you make a rabbit appear out of your
hat?" Is that just innate?
Are we born with this knowledge?
My
point comes to the stereotype we have of Magicians, which involves the
Magician wearing the tux. When the Magician is wearing the tux and he
is on a stage, he is usually presenting illusions. Gradually, the Magic
world has phased out the tux. (Thank god!) but have we also phased out
the illusion show concept? Today in 2010 some Magicians wear a simple
white shirt and jeans, and with the new look comes a more focused
intent on "Street Magic" or or as it is also
called "Close Up" Magic.
David
Blaine for instance, has done specials highlighting the "Street Magic"
and doing the Magic right under our noses. I personally like the Magic
right under my nose because I'm a Magician and I know how hard this can
be. The challenge of performing a card trick right under their noses is
a lot harder if it involves a lot of sleights but yet has a different
exciting feel to it. In the stage illusion category there is something
fantastic about hearing an entire audience gasp at the conclusion of an
effect. Isn't that just part of the allure? hearing 5000 people all
laugh or gasp at the same time, just knowing that the Magician has the
entire audience in his hand and where they go is up to him. That is the
sign of a great Magician, he knows where we are going and he leads you
there with comedy, grace and mystery and you are enjoying the ride so
much that you
insist on letting him lead.
Let's get to the
point, if you are known for doing close up, "Street Magic" type
effects....what would you do in your live 90 minute stage show with
5000 people watching? Are most of your effects going to be seen on a
big screen? and would people pay money to go and watch television for
90 minutes? I also understand that you could mix in some of the larger
stage illusions, but if close up Magic is your forte, how would you
fair? I really do see Magicians leaning more towards the "Street Magic"
and I'm just wondering how to transfer that to the stage. I love the
concept of "Street Magic" (or close up Magic) as it is a much more
difficult medium that adds such a wonderful mystery to Magic, for
instance, when you hear people talking about it later saying,
"Yes, he did that and I was sitting about two feet from him!" If you
could transfer that personal, close up feeling to the stage, you would
in fact have such a hit and you truly would have created real Magic!
